Exodus Chapters 29-31

Good evening.  This evening, we are going to work our way one step closer to finishing the book of Exodus.  Tonight, we are going to attempt to get through Exodus chapters 29, 30, and 31 if we have enough time.

But before we get started, allow me to begin our time with a word of prayer.  Let’s Pray!

As we get started, have you ever attended an ordination service for someone entering into the ministry?  If so, what was it like?

Also, what experience have you had with week-long church camps, or revivals, or any other week long celebrations?

Well, as we take a look at chapter 29 tonight, we see kind of the ordination of Aaron and his sons to be priests.  And just let me tell you, I am glad that an ordination is no longer done in this way.  So, whoever has the first 2 keys, go ahead and read them at this time please.  (READ 29:1-21, 22-46)

What is the basic order of events for an ordination service as recorded here in this text?

Why apply blood to the right ear, the right thumb, and the right big toe?

Do you think that ritual consecration of ministers is as important today as it was for ancient Israel?  Why or why not?

In this consecration for all believers, or is it reserved for just the “professional” ministers?  Why or why not?

Well, at this time, allow me to share with you what the commentary had to say about chapter 29 as a whole.  It said, (READ COMMENTARY)

Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?

Well if that is all, we will move on and take a look at chapter 30 at this time.  And we will go ahead and jump right into this chapter.  So whoever has the next 2 keys, go ahead and read those for us.  (READ 30:1-16, 17-38)

What does incense, as used here symbolize?  (Psalm 141:2, Revelation 5:8, 8:3-5)

Where is it placed, and when does this incense burn?

What were the benefits to the Israelites of census-taking?

In this chapter it talked about a ransom.  So what is a ransom?

On what basis were the rich and poor ransomed?

What could be the symbolism of the priest’s regular washing?

Do you smell like a Christian?  And how can you tell?

How can you become a “fragrant aroma” to God?  (II Colossians 2:14-16)

At this time, allow me to go ahead and read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 30.  It says, (READ COMMENTARY)

Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?

Well if that is all, we will move on and go ahead and take a look at chapter 31 tonight as well.  Before we take a look at this chapter though, answer me one question: Do you work best with ideas, things, or people?  And why?

Well, in this next chapter, we are taking a look and a couple of people, and then a reminder from God to keep the Sabbath.  Whoever has that last key, go ahead and read it for us please.  (READ 31:1-18)

What qualified Bezalel for artistic director (1-5), and who helps out?

What does this say about the way that God equips people for leadership or other tasks?

Having just set before the people all the work there is to be done, and the worker now to do it, why does God remind them about the Sabbath?

If this project was so important, why not work all 7 days?

Describe for me a skill that you have used to serve God in some way that He gave you the ability to do?

Finally, what duties crowd out your Sabbath rest?

At this time, allow me to go ahead and read for you the commentary entry for chapter 31.  It says, (READ COMMENTARY)

Now, before we close this evening, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?

Well, if there is nothing else, for next time, we will be taking a look at Exodus chapters 32, 33, and maybe even chapter 34.

About Me:

I am a 2006 graduate from Kentucky
Christian University with a major in
Preaching, and a minor in Youth
Ministry. It was in college that I met,
fell in love with, and eventually
married my best friend, and now
my wife, Nellie. I am currently
serving as the Senior Minister of
the Fly Branch Church of Christ in
Vanceburg Kentucky, where I have
been for the past five adn a half
years. I began my ministry at Fly
Branch as the Youth Minister in my
second year of College. After a
short time there became the need
for me to fill the Senior Ministry
position, and God blessed me to be
able to do that. Ever since then, I
have been preaching God’s word
both to the adults, and with the
assistance of my wife, to the youth
as well. My future plans are to follow
God in whatever direction He leads
me and my family.
