Good evening. Tonight we are going to continue to take a look at the book of Leviticus. Tonight, we are going to be looking at chapters 18, 19, and 20.
But before we get started, let’s open with a word of prayer. Get someone to pray!
Well, as we get started with chapter 18, we are reading what God had to say about unlawful sexual relations. So, whoever has the first 2 keys, go ahead and read this passage for us. (READ 18:1-15, 18:16-30)
In this chapter, Israel is called to be different than the other nations. What does this passage tell you about the sexual practices of these other nations at the time?
How would the participation in the fertility rituals of these other nations harmed Israel’s relationship with God?
What about Jacob being married with Leah and Rachel in the Genesis chapter 29?
What does it mean that those who keep or obey God’s laws, “will live by them…”?
At this time, allow me to read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 18. It said, (READ COMMENTARY)
Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?
Well, if there is nothing else, we will go ahead and move on to the next chapters. Here in chapter 19, we are reading about various laws. In this section, we see the Ten Commandments extended. So, whoever has the next 2 keys, go ahead and read those at this time. (READ 19:1-18, 19:19-37)
This chapter contains a list of the 10 commandments. What do you think is their purpose?
How might this passage have given rise to the notion of “holier-than-thou” attitude?
How can you avoid that attitude, and yet remain holy to God like He desires?
At this time, allow me to read what the commentary had to say about this chapter. It says, (READ COMMENTARY)
Does anyone have anything that they would like to add before we move on?
Well, if that is all, we will go ahead and move on to our last chapter for the evening. As we do that, what is your opinion or view on capital punishment/death penalty?
Well, here in chapter 20, we are reading about what the punishment should be for sins. Whoever has the last 2 keys, go ahead and read those for us please. (READ 20:1-13, 20:1-27)
In this chapter there are some additional laws, as well as what the consequences should be to these laws. What do you think is the purpose of this passage?
Should a person follow these rules out of fear of punishment?
After looking at passages like this, does that change your opinion on the death penalty in any way?
Is it appropriate in all cases today?
How tough is it for you to remain, “set apart from the world.”?
At this time, let me go ahead and read the commentary for this chapter. It says, (READ COMMENTARY)
Now, before we close this evening, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?
Well, if there is nothing else, for next week, we will be looking at chapters 21, 22, 23, and perhaps chapter 24 as well.
