Good evening. Tonight we are going to finish our look at the book of Leviticus. We will be looking at chapters 25, 26, and 27 this evening. And then we will not be meeting the 3 weeks due to the mission trip, vacation, and then VBS.
Now before we get started, let’s open with a word of prayer. Let’s Pray!
As we get started, if you had to take a year off, you made no money of any kind, how would you get by?
Well, in chapter 25, we are reading about the Sabbath Year, and that was a year that the people took off and did not harvest their fields, and thus, they did not have income. So, whoever has the first 3 keys, go ahead and read those at this time please. (READ 25:1-17, 25:18-34, 25:35-55)
Now, what would be the affects of this year long Sabbath?
Why do you think that God made verses 23 and 24 part of His law?
What provisions does God stipulate for if someone becomes poor?
If God opposes slavery for Israelites, and if God has just delivered them from slavery in Egypt, then why do you think He allows them to sell themselves for up to 50 years?
State in your own words the right of redemption concerning property and people?
What do you learn in this passage about relationships?
At this time, allow me to read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 25 as a whole. It said, (READ COMMENTARY)
Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?
Well, if there is nothing else, we will go ahead and move on to chapter 26. As we do that, what are some rewards that you have received because you were obedient?
Well, in this next section, God addresses some of the rewards for obedience. Whoever has the next key, go ahead and read that please. (READ 26:1-13)
Why does this chapter begin with a list of rewards for obedience?
What does that teach you about human nature?
Does obedience always have a reward or pay off?
Does having abundance always imply obedience?
Does anyone have anything else before we move on?
Well, if there is nothing else, next, God makes a transition and He addresses the consequences, or the punishment for disobedience. Whoever has the next key, go ahead and read that for us please. (READ 26:14-46)
Why do you think that God found it important to include this list of punishments for disobedience here after His list of rewards for obedience?
Of the punishments listed, which one seems most severe?
In what ways are you like and unlike you parents when it comes to your idea of discipline?
Has human nature changed much since this list of rewards and punishments were first written?
At this time, allow me to read for you what the commentary had to say about this chapter. It said, (READ COMMENTARY)
Now, does anyone have anything that they would like to add before we move on and take a look at our last chapter to the book of Leviticus?
Well, if there is nothing else, in chapter 27 we are reading about redeeming what is the Lord’s. Whoever has the last 2 keys, go ahead and read those for us please. (READ 27:1-15, 27:16-34)
What do you see as the purpose of these laws concerning servants, animals, houses, or lands?
Why do you think it was important to set a monetary value on things that were dedicated to the Lord?
Why would the people want to make these gifts to the Lord beyond their regular tithe?
What does that tell you about the people?
What does it tell you about the people’s relationship with God?
What is something that you have dedicated or given to the Lord lately?
At this time, allow me to read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 27. It said, (READ COMMENTARY)
Now, does anyone have anything that they would like to add before we close this evening?
Well, if there is nothing else, looking back, what do you see as the overall theme to the book of Leviticus?
Well, looking ahead, we will not be meeting for the next 3 weeks because of the mission trip, our vacation, and VBS. But after those events are done, we will meet back together.
When we do, what book do you want to look at next? (Luke?)
