Leviticus Chapters 21-24

Good evening.  Tonight we are going to continue with out discussion of the book of Leviticus.  So far, we have discussed the first 20 chapters of Leviticus, and tonight, we are going to take a look at chapters 21, 22, 23, and 24 if we have enough time.  Then next week, we will finish up our look at the book of Leviticus.

Before we begin tonight though, let’s open with a word of prayer.  Let’s Pray!

Which of these qualities would impress you most in a minister: honesty, good speaker, able to be “human,” sense of humor, gives short sermons, or other?

Do you have any rules for the way that you think a minister should or should not act, dress, and the kind of things that they should or should not do?  If so, what?

Well, in chapter 21 of the book of Leviticus, we are reading about rules for the priests.  And we are actually going to read chapter 21 and into chapter 22 all at the same time.  So, whoever has the first 2 keys, go ahead and read those for us please.  (READ 21:1-20, 21:21-22:16)

Based on this passage, how important would you say the sacrificial system was to God?

Why do you think that these rules for the priests were given to all the Israelites and not just given to the priests in their private education?

Of the things that you mentioned in the beginning about way that you think the minister should act, are they supported here or any other place in scripture?

At this time, allow me to go ahead and read for you what the commentary had to say about the 21st chapter of the book of Leviticus.  It says, (READ COMMENTARY)

Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?

Well, if there is nothing else, we will go ahead and take a look at the rest of chapter 22 next.  As we start, describe for me a time when you took extra care in choosing and wrapping a special gift?

Well, in the rest of chapter 22, we are reading about unacceptable sacrifices.  Whoever has the next key, go ahead and read that for us please.  (READ 22:17-33)

Why do you think that God only accepts perfect offerings and sacrifices?

What does this desire for perfection say about the value of the gift?

The recipient?

The donor?

Now simply think about these last couple of questions.  In what area of you life are you giving God less than your best?  And also, where are you trying to just get by with offering God your leftovers?

At this time, allow me to read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 22.  It says, (READ COMMENTARY)

Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?

Well, if that is all, we will go ahead and move into chapter 23 of the book of Leviticus.  And as we do that, what big occasion or special time do you celebrate with your family and friends each year?

Well, in this entire chapter, God takes time and discusses all f the feasts that He wanted Moses to talk to the people about.  So, whoever has the next 2 keys, go ahead and read those please.  (READ 23:1-22, 23:22-44)

What do you see as the basic purpose behind these feasts?

How would they help to maintain a correct relationship with God?

Why would Israel not be allowed to work on these special days?

What is God saying by requiring the first part of their harvest?

Do you think that God still expects that of His people today?

If so, how do you do that?

At this time, let me go ahead and read what the commentary has to say.  It says, (READ COMMENTARY)

Now, does anyone have anything that they would like to add before we move on?

Well, if there is nothing else, we will go ahead and take a look at one last chapter this evening.  In fact, whoever has the last key, go ahead and read that chapter for us please.  (READ 24:1-23)

Do you think that God really needed oil lamps and bread?

Then what is their purpose?

Define blasphemy?

What do you think about verses 17-22?

At this time, allow me to go ahead and read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 24 as a whole.  It says, (READ COMMENTARY)

Now, before we close this evening, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?

Well, if there is nothing else, for next week, we will finish up the book of Leviticus.  So that will be chapters 25, 26, and 27.

About Me:

I am a 2006 graduate from Kentucky
Christian University with a major in
Preaching, and a minor in Youth
Ministry. It was in college that I met,
fell in love with, and eventually
married my best friend, and now
my wife, Nellie. I am currently
serving as the Senior Minister of
the Fly Branch Church of Christ in
Vanceburg Kentucky, where I have
been for the past five adn a half
years. I began my ministry at Fly
Branch as the Youth Minister in my
second year of College. After a
short time there became the need
for me to fill the Senior Ministry
position, and God blessed me to be
able to do that. Ever since then, I
have been preaching God’s word
both to the adults, and with the
assistance of my wife, to the youth
as well. My future plans are to follow
God in whatever direction He leads
me and my family.
