Luke Chapters 12-13

Good evening.  Tonight, we are going to continue our look at the book of Luke.  Thus far, we have discussed chapters 1-11, and that leaves us with 13 chapters left to discuss.  Tonight, we are going to take a look at chapters 12 and 13.

Before we get started, let’s open with a word of prayer.  Pray!

As we get started tonight, we are going to be reading about some warnings and encouragements, and then taking a look at a rich fool.  So, whoever has the first key, go ahead and read that please.  (READ 12:1-21)

In that first section, we see that the crowds are growing.  Why is that?

What warnings does Jesus issue to the disciples in verses 1-3?

What does it mean to “blaspheme against the Holy Spirit?”

What was Jesus warning against when He said, “Watch out!” in verse 15?

What problem did the man in this parable face?

What was his solution?

Why did that displease God?

How can the attitude of, “take life easy: eat, drink, and be merry” lead to problems?

How can that attitude affect your relationship with God?

What do you think about, “A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions”?

Does anyone have anything to add before we move on?

Well, if there is nothing else, are you more of a night owl, or an early bird?

Well, in our next section to chapter 12, we are reading about not worrying, and being watchful.  So, whoever has the next key, go ahead.  (READ 12:22-48)

How does the section about not worrying relate to the parable about riches?

What does Jesus tell the disciples not to do? (Verse 22)

On a scale of 1, being no sweat, to 10, being panic, what is the worry level in your life right now?

Explain the role reversal in verse 37?

How would you feel about Jesus serving you?

Why does Jesus tell them that they should be ready?

Does anyone have anything else to add before we move on?

Well, if that is all, we will move on and finish chapter 12.  In this last section, we are reading about the division that Christ brings, and about interpreting the times.  Whoever has the next key, go ahead and read that for us please.  (READ 12:49-59)

How and why does Jesus bring division?

What is Jesus saying in that last little section?

At this time, allow me to go ahead and read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 12.  It says, (READ COMMENTARY)

Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?

Well, if there is nothing, we will go ahead and take a look at chapter 13 tonight as well.  In fact, whoever has the next key, go ahead.  (READ 13:1-21)

What is the danger of associating someone’s misfortune with sin?

If people had one more year to turn their lives around like the fig tree, what do you think they should or would do?

How does Jesus expose the ruler’s hypocrisy in verses 10-17?

What does the contrast between the seed and tree teach about God’s Kingdom?

What does yeast teach us about the Kingdom of God?

Does anyone have anything else to add?

Well, if that is all, we will go ahead and finish this chapter up.  Whoever has the last key, go ahead and read that for us please.  (READ 13:22-35)

According to Jesus who will and won’t make it through the narrow door? (Verse 30)

If God really loves people, then why isn’t the door wider?

What do you think Jesus means by, “evil doers”?

In the end, do you think only a few, or many, or all people will be saved?  Why?

What strikes you about Jesus’ prophecy in verses 31-35?

Picture this: What would it mean for each of us to gather under Jesus’ wings?

At this time, allow me to read the commentary for chapter 13.  In the commentary it says, (READ COMMENTARY)

Now, before we close this evening, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?

Well, if there is nothing else, for next week, we are going to attempt to get through chapters 14, 15, and 16.  They start to get a little smaller now.

About Me:

I am a 2006 graduate from Kentucky
Christian University with a major in
Preaching, and a minor in Youth
Ministry. It was in college that I met,
fell in love with, and eventually
married my best friend, and now
my wife, Nellie. I am currently
serving as the Senior Minister of
the Fly Branch Church of Christ in
Vanceburg Kentucky, where I have
been for the past five adn a half
years. I began my ministry at Fly
Branch as the Youth Minister in my
second year of College. After a
short time there became the need
for me to fill the Senior Ministry
position, and God blessed me to be
able to do that. Ever since then, I
have been preaching God’s word
both to the adults, and with the
assistance of my wife, to the youth
as well. My future plans are to follow
God in whatever direction He leads
me and my family.
