Tonight we are going to continue our study of the book of Luke. Tonight we will be looking at chapters 19 and 20.
As we get started, what childhood Bible songs do you remember? (Zacchaeus)
Before we take a look at tonight’s Bible study, let’s begin with a word of prayer…
Whoever has the first key, go ahead and read that for us please. (READ 19:1-10)
How does Zacchaeus compare to the rich young ruler we read about earlier?
If you had been Zacchaeus when Jesus stopped under your tree and told you, “come down immediately,” how would you have felt?
Why does Jesus choose to dine with him?
Why does this bother everyone else so much?
Well, since only tax collectors knew the rate required by Rome, they could inflate the rate and keep the difference for themselves. Though a Jew, Zacchaeus would have been hated as a traitor who got rich at his fellow people’s expense. And for Jesus to go to his house was improper in the easy of other Jews.
What do you think motivated Zacchaeus to make restitution to those he cheated?
Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything to add?
Well, if there is nothing else, let’s go ahead and take a look at the next section. In this next section, we will be taking a look at one of Jesus’ parables. As we do that, what has been the best financial investment that you have made?
Well, at this time, whoever has the next key, go ahead. (READ 19:11-27)
Where does the man of noble birth go, and why?
What are his servants to do in his absence?
What happened with the first guy?
What was his reward?
What happened with the second guy?
What was his reward?
What happened with the third servant?
How was he treated?
What talents and resources do you think God has left with you?
How do you feel about the way that you have invested them?
Now, before we move on, is there anything else?
Well, if that is all, let’s go ahead and finish this chapter. In fact, whoever has the next key, go ahead and read that for us please. (READ 19:28-48)
With Passover just a few days away, Jerusalem would have been filled with travelers. Jesus makes an entrance into the “holy city” on the first day of this, the last week of His life.
What task does Jesus give to 2 of His disciples?
What problems might they face?
Why do you think the crowd responded the way that they did?
What caused Jesus to weep over Jerusalem?
How has Jesus “turned over tables” in you life?
What else stands out to you about Jesus at the temple?
At this time, allow me to read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 19. It says, (READ COMMENTARY)
Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything to add about chapter 19?
Well, if there is nothing else, we will go ahead and dive into chapter 20 tonight as well. And to start, we will be taking a look at the authority of Jesus being questioned, and then Jesus telling the parable of the tenants. So, whoever has the next key, go ahead and read that for us please. (READ 20:1-19)
In the first section, what “things,” in verse has Jesus been doing?
What about these things would worry the chief priests?
What do you think about the way that Jesus handles this situation?
In the next parable, what does the landowner do?
How are his servants treated?
How is his son treated?
What does he do to solve the problem?
In this parable, who does everyone represent?
The religious leaders are upset because Jesus is talking about them, but why don’t they do anything about it?
Does anyone have anything to add?
Well, if that is all, let’s go ahead move on to the next section. In verses 20-26, we are reading about paying taxes. I will go ahead and read that passage. (READ 20:20-26)
Why ask the question in verse 22?
What is the trap here? (If Jesus says pay Caesar, if Jesus says don’t pay)
How does Jesus handle this situation?
Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?
Well, if there is nothing else, we will go ahead and finish this chapter. Whoever has the last key, go ahead and read that for us. (READ 20:27-47)
Why would the Sadducees pose a question like this to Jesus? (They don’t believe in)
What does Jesus teach about life after death?
How do you deal with someone who wants to argue a point in the Bible?
What if a person asks you a serious question, and you don’t know the answer?
And finally, what is Jesus’ point in the last section, “Whose Son Is The Christ”?
At this time, let me go ahead and read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 20 as a whole. It says, (READ COMMENTARY)
Now, before we close this evening, does anyone have anything to add?
Well, if that is all, for next week, we will be looking at chapters 21 and 22.
