Good evening. Tonight we are going to continue our look into the book of Luke. This evening, we will be discussing chapters 8 and 9. Before we do that though, let’s begin with a word of prayer.
Let’s Pray!
As we get started, what is your secret to success when it comes to gardening?
Well, as we examine a familiar passage, we are reading about the Parable of the Sower. So, whoever has the first key, go ahead and read that passage for us at this time please. (READ 8:1-15)
First off, what is a parable?
Why does Jesus use parables?
What sticks out to you, or what do you learn from this parable?
Does anyone have anything that they would like to add before we move on?
Well, if there is nothing else, we will take a look at our next key. As we do that, what is the purpose of a light?
Well, in this next passage, we are reading about a lamp stand, Jesus’ mother and brothers, Jesus taking control over nature itself, and then the healing of a demon possessed man. So, whoever has the next key, go ahead and read that please. (READ 8:16-39)
What feelings do you have about verse 17?
Who are Jesus’ mother and brothers? Why?
What is Jesus teaching His disciples about ignoring and then rebuking the storm?
What tone do you think Jesus used in verse 25?
What strikes you most about these demons?
How do the pig farmers respond to what happens?
Why is everyone afraid?
Why did they want Jesus to leave?
Usually doing the opposite, why does Jesus tell this guy to tell other what happened?
Does anyone have anything else to add?
Well, if that is all, we will go ahead and finish this chapter up with the last section. And whoever has that next key, go ahead and read that. (READ 8:40-56)
Why do you think Jesus makes the sick woman reveal herself?
How was her faith obvious to Jesus?
Why does Jesus sometimes tell people to be quiet, and other times to tell others?
At this time, allow me to read for you what the commentary had to say about this chapter. It says, (READ COMMENTARY)
Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?
Well, if there is nothing else, we will go ahead and move into chapter 9 tonight as well. Here in chapter 9, we see a variety of events take place. Whoever has the next key, go ahead and read that for us please. (READ 9:1-17)
What are the disciples told to do by Jesus as He sends them out?
How does King Herod react to what is going on?
How can you account for the difference in the way Jesus and the disciples view the crowds?
What thoughts must the disciples be having as they are about to feed the people?
How about as they are collecting all the leftovers?
Does anyone have anything else they would like to add?
Well, if that is all, we will move on to our next section. Whoever has the next key, go ahead and read that for us please. (READ 9:18-36)
Why would Jesus be interested in the opinion of the crowds?
Why does Jesus ask the follow up question (Verse 20)?
Why did Jesus take the 3 to experience the transfiguration with Him?
Does anyone have anything else to add?
Well, if there is nothing else, we will move on and take a look at the rest of chapter 9. Whoever has that last key, go ahead and read that for us please. (READ 9:37-62)
What feelings are behind Jesus’ words in verse 41?
In verses 46-50, how are the disciples measuring greatness?
What is your favorite excuse that you hear people give for things?
How does Jesus respond to these particular excuses by these 3 men?
At this time, allow me to read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 9. It says, (READ COMMENTARY)
Now, before we close this evening, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?
Well, if there is nothing else, for next time, we will be looking at chapters 10 and 11.
