Luke Chapters 21-22a

Good evening.  Tonight we come one step away from finishing up our study of the book of Luke.  Tonight, we are going to take a look at chapter 21 and most of chapter 22.  And then next week, we will finish chapter 22, and finish off by taking a look at chapters 23 and 24.

And let’s go ahead and jump right into tonight’s chapters.  I will begin by reading the first little section.  In Luke 21:1-4 we are reading about the widow’s offering.  So here we go.  (READ 21:1-4)

What is the difference between the rich offering and the widow’s offering?

What can we learn form this story?

Does anyone have anything to add before we move on?

Well, if there is nothing else, we will go ahead and move on to the next section.  Whoever has the first key, go ahead and read that please.  (READ 21:5-5-39)

What bombshell does Jesus drop on His disciples in verse 6?

Considering how the Jews felt about the temple, how would they have felt after hearing Jesus’ words?

What will happen to the church and to the disciples during the tribulation (10)?

What comfort will come in the midst of the trials?

What is the lesson of the fig tree in verses 29-31?

How does this lesson answer the disciple’s question from verse 7?

How would the promise from verses 32-33 have been a comfort to the disciples?

How could it have been a discomfort?

After reading the parable of the fig tree, how near is the fig tree to sprouting?

At this time, allow me to read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 21.  It says, (READ COMMENTARY)

Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?

Well, if that is all, we will go ahead and take a look at chapter 22.  In this next section, we are going to be taking a look at Judas agreeing to betray Jesus, and we will take a look at the Last Supper.  So, whoever has the next key, go ahead and read that for us.

(READ 22:1-37)

What stands out to you about Judas betraying Jesus?

If you had been there, how would you have reacted to the news of Jesus’ unnamed betrayer?

Well, on the ever of His crucifixion, Jesus eagerly desires to share the annual Passover meal with His disciples.

At this meal, Jesus transforms the Passover from a remembrance of God’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt to a time of remembering God’s deliverance of humanity from sin.  During this meal, Jesus also takes the opportunity to emphasize again the need for His followers to be like Him, servants.

How do you think Jesus felt at His Last Supper?

What was Jesus’ point to the dispute among the disciples about which of them was considered to be the greatest?

How can you prepare for Communion to make it more meaningful to you?

Why is the Lord’s Supper important to believers?

How must Peter feel in verses 31-34?

What are the differences between Judas and Peter?

Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?

Well, if that is all, we will go ahead and take a look at the next section.  In this next passage, we are going to be looking at Jesus praying on the Mount of Olives, and Jesus being arrested.  So, whoever has the next key, go ahead and read that.  (READ 22:39-53)

What is it that strikes you most about Jesus’ prayer?

What is the crowd that comes for Jesus so large and armed?

How would you compare Jesus’ attitude and actions with those of His disciples?

Now, before we move on, does anyone have anything to add?

Well, if that is all, we will go ahead and finish this chapter by looking at Peter disowning Jesus, and then we will cover the rest of chapter 22 next week.  So, whoever has the last key, go ahead and read that please.  (READ 22:54-62)

This Bible story is about Peter facing failure and pain.  At the Last Supper Peter had just pledged his loyalty to Jesus, and in response Jesus predicted Peter’s disloyalty.  We pick up the story just a few house later when Jesus has been arrested and brought to the place of the high priest for a pretrial interrogation.  Peter had followed Jesus at a distance and is now sitting in a nearby courtyard where he is confronted.

Why did Peter deny he knew Jesus?

How do you think Peter felt when Jesus looked right at him?

What have you found helpful in dealing with failure?

At this time, allow me to read for you what the commentary had to say about chapter 22.  It says, (READ COMMENTARY)

Now, before we close, does anyone have anything that they would like to add?

Well, if there is nothing else, for next time, we will take a look at the rest of chapter 22, and then finish off with chapters 23 and 24.
